General Overview of Dumaguete City, Philippines

Dumaguete City is the largest city in the Province of Negros Oriental with 30 barangays under its jurisdiction. It has been proclaimed city in 1948 and has become the capital of the province since then. The census of 2007 showed that the city has a population of 116,392; the area of 34.26 km2 or 13.2 sq mi is too wide for Dumaguete to be labeled as “overpopulated.”

Also known as “The City of Gentle People,” Dumaguete is best described as “University Town” because it is a home to four universities and a number of colleges. Students from the nearby cities like Tanjay City and Bais City in the north, and Bayawan City in the south come to Dumaguete to enroll. Silliman University, the very first Protestant and American university in the Philippines, holds the prestige of being famous as well as the honor of producing cream of the crop graduates.

The City of Dumaguete is not a highly-urbanized place yet it attracts more tourists and travelers. It has a domestic airport in Sibulan which is open for flights from Cebu City and Metro Manila. The Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific and Air Philippines are the major air transportation companies which cater daily flights for travelers traveling to and fro the city.

Dumaguete has a lot to offer for the travelers, tourists, students and business investors.  The presence of Robinson’s Place Dumaguete has opened yet another opportunity for investors and for the people who are seeking for a living. Moreover, there are three call centers operating in the heart of the city; TeleTech, ePLDT Ventus and StudentUniverse.
