Basic Information About the City of Smiles
The City of Smiles, a moniker gained by the City of Bacolod due to its typically hospitable and very-Filipino way of welcoming guests, is one of the mid-sized cities in the Philippines. Situated in the northwestern part of Negros Island, this city is part of the Western Visayas Region in Negros Occidental. It can be reached from Manila by a 45-minute plane ride.
The general climate of the area varies between 2 seasons: wet and dry. The typical rainy season starts from May to January and the rest of the months are generally dry. Tourists flock to Bacolod during the dry season. It is bounded by the cities of Talisay and Silay in the north, while Bago City lies in the south.
The city has recently become a hub of BPOs (Business Process Outsourcing) in the region. As of this writing, there are already 7 BPO companies investing in the city, contributing about 80 million pesos every month to the local economy here. Bacolod is also a favorite destination of Korean students trying to study the English language. Several excellent schools and universities are providing competitive human resources in the total workforce of the city.
