Pacquiao vs. Mayweather Will Take Place in Due Time
MANILA, Philippines – The CEO of Golden Boy Promotions (GBP), Richard Schaefer, defended the undefeated Floyd Mayweather amid the commotions that he is ducking the Pinoy boxer, Manny Pacquiao.
For several months, the GBP CEO read in hundreds of newspapers, blogs and websites, watched in TV and heard from radio countless attacks on the six-time title holder. Among all those attacks include the idea that Mayweather is so afraid to fight Pacquiao and get beaten.
“Basically what I’ve been reading and hearing is that Mayweather is afraid of fighting Pacquiao or he would’ve agreed to the fight. They say he must be hiding somewhere. I read it in blogs, I hear it from HBO commentators, a lot of people are saying it,” Schaefer said.
“We haven’t heard anything from Mayweather’s side, though. I feel we need to sit back and think for a second: What’s going on here,” he added.
Schaefer said that the very thing that the Floyd is focusing right now is how to clear his name and resolve all his legal problems. This is with regard to the felony assault charged by his ex-girlfriend, as well as other assault accusations.
“I don’t think Floyd really needs to make a statement on this. People should be smart enough to realize that he’s in the middle of legal proceedings. His focus and energy is on that, clearing his name, not on making a fight. That’s just common sense. Anything else would be disrespectful to a judge or the legal system. … He could say, OK, let’s fight Pacquiao in May or whenever and make a deal. How would a judge feel about that? You just don’t do that,” Schaefer justified.
One of the most anticipated fights in this millenium is the one between Pacquiao and Mayweather. So is there any chance that the fight will take place?
“I can assure you,” Schaefer added, “that when the time is right, he’ll fight Pacquiao and beat Pacquiao.”
