Sabong or Derby has always been a part of Pinoys’ way of living. Surveys will reveal that 4 out of 10 people like sabong as their favorite past time.

Breeding a derby cock is just like preparing a boxer for a big fight. However, what most of the backyard breeders tend to forget is the health of their stag. More often, they focus on the training to the extent that their fighting cocks are stressed out, thus, cannot put a good fight and will end up losing to its opponent.

So, how would you raise a stag that will surely win a fight?

These are just principles that I have been applying to my fighting stags. I am proud to say that I also got these tips from high-profile derby winners in the Philippines like Ramon Mitra and others.

First Tip: Choose a good breed of stag

If you are just starting out to breed a derby cock, then you must seek advices from people who have been in derby business for quite some time now. From them, you will get the idea as to what breeds are the best for sabong.

You should not neglect this because the breed is one of the most important things to consider. It is in the blood of the stags that you will learn how they fight. No breed is the same as the other, and there are always superior and inferior breeds.

Second Tip: Keep your stag as healthy as possible

It is a good practice to monitor your stag from the day they hatch from eggs until the day you bring them into the pit to fight.

The point is, you must have an eye on their health. It is not enough that you will set them free from the day they hatch until they are ready to fight. You must have a good place for them wherein you can monitor their health.

Moreover, you should give them enough vitamins and minerals needed for the development of their organs and the formation of their bones. Above all, you must give them enough food for their growth.

Third Tip: You must have a good training program

Training is also very important as it will develop the instincts and reflexes of your fighting stag. You must remember that instinct is the “command center” of the reflexes. The better your stag develop its fighting instincts, the better it commands its reflexes.

It is also in training that your derby cocks will develop longer stamina, tolerance and resistance.

Just like boxers, stags improve their fighting skills in training. Others may not believe that derby cocks can develop their fighting style in training, but the fact is, all of the breeders train their fighters better than others to ensure win.

Why are there breeders who can win 5 or even 10 consecutive wins?

The Bottom Line

You may find it difficult to understand how these three aspects can make you win big. Imagine this; different kinds of breeds have different style of fighting. Others are natural-born fighters, what you can do about that is to ensure that your fighters will grow without disabilities, thus ensuring their health. Lastly, you will have to supplement their fighting style by making them get used to their skills; teach them how to fly without being exhausted, help them develop powerful strikes that could slice their opponent’s body in one attack.

So, the basic principle is the breed, health and training. If you can perfect all these, you can win any sabong tournaments of derby cups.
