It’s never new to every Filipino to hear President Aquino calling the previous administration “corrupt” almost every time he makes his speech. Former president Gloria Arroyo’s camp, however, does not release any counter arguments every time until recently. The Arroyo wheelchair joke should have gotten into the nerves of Arroyo, her family and legal counsel that they have to allow Atty Ferdinand Topacio (the lawyer who, by the way, once bet one of his balls if the First Gentleman wouldn’t come home) to counter what Aquino joked while delivering his speech before a Filipino community in Auckland, New Zealand.
Aquino’s striking joke was this:
“You know, let me just share this joke. I kept laughing when I got it. It said, ‘Our fellow Filipinos who are corrupt use luxurious cars, so expensive and fast. But when they want to escape, they use a wheelchair.’”
Topacio’s counter was this:
“As the elders would say, ‘Nagpapatawa pero hindi naman kalbo’ as far as the saying applies to the President. It trivializes the sickness of a person who is suffering from a disease and pokes fun at the anxiety her condition has brought to the Arroyo Family.”
We are not judging anyone here but we are open for discussion.
So, what do you feel about Aquino’s remarks on the apparent health condition of Arroyo?
Was the joke done in poor taste as what Topacio said?
Was it even necessary to tell such kind of joke before Filipinos abroad?
